Vishal Bharadwaj is known as a director for his brilliant adaptation of classics...A lot of people have not read them ( my roomie has ) , but still , they seem to like em, simply because of the earnest ferocity in the plot of such movies....
Othello aka Omkara , is one of his noticeable hits , and well ,no one can mistake Saif Ali Khans performance nor Ajay Devgans for bad acting. It was simply one helluva multi-starrer with the characters blending in magnificently with the star charisma.
Then came along Kaminey ,with some very snazzy ( i dunno wat else to call it) cinematography and some surrealist ,if not Quentin Tarantinoish , but yet still western stylish narration and a very stylish actor in Shahid Kapoor along with a very earthy yet glamorous priyanka chopra. No one hated that movie either.Prolly coz the music was good and all was forgivable as long as there was some love interest in teh background and some manly action in the foreground (and plenty of horse riding.no pun intended.)
It was yet another turn for Vishal Bharadwaj to do something different...And he chose fiction/fantasy or whatever you call it.So much fantasy, so dark in ways that can either make you feel some kind of sympathy for the protagonist or hate her for her lack of respect for human life.Well whatever it might be, it was one bold move.Suzanna is one hell of a character. You cant explain what she does. She couldnt be real.Even if you do try to portray her with the most complicated state machine diagrams (cause->effect), you are going to fail incredibly....
Unless..
You start believing that it is possible for a person to sincerely love someone and believe that they have all rights on that person.Treachery is a sin and any sinner needs punishment. This reminds me of a line from the movie itself, where the protagonist is said to have been someone " who kills mad dogs rather than leave them alone" . This virtue( i dont think i should call it that. But in the context of the movie , it is definitely forgivable to call it so), that the protagonist has , has been so wonderfully portrayed in every way possible. The camera work in this movie is slightly on the darker side. Why not , no one is here to see the faces.! Priyanka chopra expresses herself beautifully. Not once does she look to be falling out of her character at any point of time. The make up is brilliant (and odd at times) , and the score is haunting..Im not much of a man who can judge the direction of the movie , but i thought that this was awfully well put together, though the sequential treatment of the timeline could have been avoided to reduce the boredom factor.Only someone incredibly absorbed in the depth of the characters would ideally be pleased in watching this.
PS : This is not a movie that everyone will like.So in a popular ratiing system ( call it the TOI rating), the movie is a 3 starrer. This is just because most people like movies with the oomph factor/ an entertainment quotient. This movie needs to be treated with respect ..If you start empathizing with the character in the movie, you might end up liking it , otherwise i would kinda feel sorry for you :D .
-- 7 khoon maaf.Waiting for more movies like this .
